The older that we get, the more complicated it can get to stay in shape.  Our metabolism slows down, and we may find ourselves a little less mobile and “sprite” than we were in, say, our 20’s. 

However, that’s not to say that we have to give in to our age and allow ourselves to get out of shape! By engaging in a healthy lifestyle, and practicing healthy habits, you can not only get in shape, but maybe even find yourself in the best shape of your life! 

So if you’re ready, here are some of the best tips for staying physically fit over the age of 70 and beyond. 

Get Moving

Moving more— it may seem so simple and easy that it sounds impossible, yet, it’s incredibly effective! Moving as much as you can will keep your metabolism up, keep you strong, and burn off calories. Whether you decide to go for a swim, or walk for 20 minutes a day, the more you move, the more in shape you’ll be. 

It’s really that simple. Staying in shape means more than just looking your best. You’ll be much less susceptible to injury and even illness.  If exercise isn’t your thing, then try to find some sort of movement that you enjoy.

Maybe you could take a dance class! You never know, you may just be the next Ginger Rogers and you don’t even know it.

Consult With Your Doctor

If you’re over a certain number on the scale and you’re concerned about why the weight isn’t coming off, it may be time to talk to the doctor to help you identify whether it may be something more serious like a thyroid issue.

They can also help guide you on the best exercises for your fitness level, as not all exercises may be ideal for your current health.

Eat Plenty of Vegetables

No one is saying that you can’t enjoy a little pasta or bread sometimes, however, the more you load up on useless carbohydrates, the more you may be attributing to your waistline getting wider!

Replace some of those carbohydrates you’re eating for leafy green vegetables like kale, spinach, and broccoli.

The more you can fill up your stomach with vegetables, the less calories you’ll consume overall, and the slimmer your waistline will be too.

Listen to Your Body

One of the most important parts of working out is making sure that you listen to your body. If you start to feel sore or a certain amount of pain in one area of your body, stop before it gets worse.

The last thing you want is to suffer an injury which could force you to have to give up on your workout routine entirely.
