If you are over the age of 70 and have recently reached retirement, you may not know what to do with all the free time you now have on your hands. After working hard your whole life, it can be difficult to transition into a brand new lifestyle. Retirement can be the best time of your life, you just may have to make a few small adjustments.
Here are 3 helpful lifestyle tips for recent retirees.
Listen To Your Body
Many people are able to retire before their health starts to decline, and that’s great! If you are able to stay just as active as you did when you were young, you will really love being retired because you’ll be able to do all the fun things you want.
However, with age can come health issues and disabilities that can be hard to get used to. You may want to travel the world now that you finally have the time, but it is important to listen to your body.
If you can feel yourself slowing down, make sure to take on only the things you know you can handle. You can still do many of the things you want in your retirement, you might just have to do modified versions of them and that’s OK.
Don’t Work Too Hard
Many people find that being retired is a little boring for them. Some are workaholics who just don’t like sitting still too much and like to be working in some capacity.
Just because you have retired from your full-time job doesn’t mean you can’t work at all, and you may be like the many others who decide they would like to turn their hobby into a business or get a part time job just to make some extra cash.
Others choose to start doing volunteer work to occupy their time. Whatever you decide, it is a good rule of thumb to continually remind yourself that you are indeed retired and you shouldn’t work too hard. If you notice yourself getting antsy to take on more work or projects, take a step back and remind yourself that you deserve a little rest and relaxation!
Budget Wisely
Something about retirement that is hard for people to get used to is that they aren’t making the same income they were used to making when they were working. You will have to sit down and make a reasonable budget once you figure out what your monthly income with social security and what not is going to be.
Many retirees live on what is called a “fixed income” or have to live off of retirement savings entirely and this can be a challenge to get used to, but once you get the hang of it hopefully you will find that you can afford everything you need.
Congratulations on your recent retirement! Use these tips to help you ease into your new and exciting lifestyle.
