When working on the interior design and decor of your home, one of the first things you’ll want to nail down is the color scheme. However, with this being such a big decision that can have a huge impact on the overall look and feel of your space, many people panic when it comes time to choose which colors to go with.
If this is where you’re currently finding yourself, here are three tips for choosing a color scheme for a room in your house.
Get Inspiration From Your Closet
While you might have heard that certain colors work better in certain spaces, when you’re talking about your own home, you’re going to want to go with colors that you know and love.
To get some help with this, you may want to head over to your closet for inspiration. Many people find that they choose colors of clothes that either look good on them or make them feel a certain way. And since you’re wanting to look and feel good in your home, choosing a color scheme based on the clothes you already gravitate toward can be a great jumping off point.
Even if your closet doesn’t give you the exact colors that you’re wanting to go with, knowing which shades you tend to lean toward, like blues, grays, reds as such, can help you find a little more direction for making the final choice for your color scheme or palette.
Go Lighter As You Move Upward
Once you have the colors that you’re wanting to use in your space, you may still be having a hard time with figuring out how to actually implement them into the space.
To help with this, you may want to use the principle of choosing the darkest color for the base of the room and going lighter as you move vertically higher. The reasoning for this is that it reflects that natural world, where the ground beneath your feet is dark and the sky above your head is light.
So for your flooring, be it carpeting, hardwood, or a tile option, choose the darkest color you’re working with and then choose the next lighter color for the next layer up.
Consider How Large Your Space Is
As you’re getting your color scheme figured out, one final thing you’ll want to consider is how large of a space you’ll be working with.
For smaller spaces, you may want to keep the number of colors you’re using pretty minimal so it doesn’t make the space feel cluttered, busy, and smaller than it actually is. For larger spaces, going with a monochromatic color scheme can work really well.
Or, if you have a lot of area to fill like in an open concept, choosing three colors to integrate throughout the space is another great choice.
If you’re needing to decide on a color scheme for part or all of your home, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you figure this out.
