Top Tips to Prepare Your Car for Winter

Winter is finally here and as we say goodbye to brighter days and the temperature starts to drop, it is important that we make sure our car is prepared for the winter season. The colder weather means that our cars are far more likely to break down and the interior can be affected too.

Make sure you follow our top tips below to prepare your car for winter and ensure that it runs perfectly through until Spring.

Have Your Car Serviced

Before the colder weather hits, one of the first things that you will want to do is make sure that your car is serviced. While the cold weather can cause a lot of problems in cars, most of these problems are actually preventable simply be having your car serviced before winter.

This does not have to cost you the earth and you can watch out for some great deals or discounted prices that many garages will offer.

Check Your Battery

A main priority when preparing your car for the winter season is to make sure that you have checked your battery. Your batter will have its output reduced over the winter months and the cold temperature will put it under a lot of extra strain.

Your battery should have a lifespan of around five years and it may need replaced this winter season. If you don’t want to be stuck with your car not turning on this winter season, this is a must to check.

Check Your Tyres

Your tyres always need to be in good working condition as they are the key part to both braking and steering. You will need to check their tread depth and pressure and if you live in a particularly cold climate then you may even want to think about switching out your tyres and having a set for summer and a set for winter that will be able to more easily work in the snow and ice.

Protect Your Interior

During the colder months, not only will you and your family be dragging in a lot of water from the rain into your car, you will also be bringing in grit and snow too which can have a big impact on the interior of your car.

To keep the inside of your car clean and tidy this winter, make sure that you have weathertech floor mats in place to protect the flooring from wet and grit, and that you have good seat covers to protect your seat material from the harsh weather conditions.

Have a Winter Car Breakdown Kit

No matter how diligent you are with your car maintenance, there is always the chance that your car could still break down over the winter season. Give yourself the peace of mind that should this happen, at least you will be prepared!

Make a breakdown kit with essentials such as a blanket, torch, food, water, scrapers, a de-icer and shoes suitable for snowy weather.
