7 Actions to bring you Closer to Becoming a Professional Speaker

Becoming a thought leader is actually easier than you think. However, it does require commitment and determination to get to the level where others are seeking you out!

If you can see yourself as a professional speaker and you have already enjoyed sharing you knowledge with others, with a bit of time and the right approach and strategies, you can be well on your way to achieving the career of your dreams.

Here are some actions you can take to ‘bridge the gap’ between where you are now and where you want to be.

Influential Leadership

Speaking is far less about talking to people and more about, taking them with you on a journey. One of the many skills successful professional speakers possess is an ability to lead an audience and influence them to invest in the ideas, concepts and topics they are speaking about.

Leadership qualities and the ability to influence are core skills required to achieve this so invest time in mastering these particular skills through your experience.

Personal Investment

To excel in any arena it is useful to invest time and money. Whilst practice and repetition are great ways to perfect a skill, it is also incredibly important to continue to learn specific approaches by attending courses and seminars on presentation or speaking skills to help you stay current and master your craft.

Embrace Opportunities

Say ‘yes’ to any and all opportunities available to you to share your knowledge with others – seek out, offer and accept unpaid speaking slots in schools or small groups – whatever the size, just say yes! The more you put yourself out there, the more likely you are to make new connections and networks, opening up new possibilities each time you speak, whilst of course honing your skills as a speaker.

‘Model’ the Masters

‘Modelling’ is a term used in Neuro Linguistic Programming which describes the process of recreating excellence. The act of ‘modelling’ can be achieved by studying the behaviours of a person who is already doing what you wish to master. First you need to choose a professional speaker to model, and then find out as much as possible about them.

Watch videos, read their books and take note of what they say, how they behave, their physiology and their strategies that make them successful. For example, if they have a specific routine or ritual that helps them prepare for speaking events – give it a try yourself.

Do your research and find out as much about them as possible – not to become an exact replica but to utilise what works for them into your own speaking strategies. You can also attend some media training to sharpen your skills.

Seek Feedback

There is no failure, only feedback! Each time you speak, you will be learning how to be even better next time. The best way to know what is working for you and what isn’t, is to ask others for their perspective and equally evaluate your own performance each time.

Always ask yourself, what can I do differently next time that will get even better results? If you received positive feedback and got a 9 out of 10, ask yourself – what do I need to do to get a 10?

You are the Brand

Find your USP (unique selling point), what makes you different? How can you stand out amongst the many other professional speakers? What can you offer that others can’t? In this field, your potential customer will not only be looking for a confident and charismatic professional but someone who can add value to their audience and support an outcome they are looking to achieve – a skill, technique, approach or simply a positive emotional state.

Specialist Knowledge

Clients seek specialists, generalists seek clients! Select an area that you are already an expert in and see if you can make it even more specialised. The most important thing is that you have command of the topic – you know your stuff and can talk about your subject matter with ease and confidence, whilst making it easy for others to understand and absorb.

To be a master speaker, you need to be able to easily engage the audience’s attention, adapt to their reactions and answer their questions.
