Is Glutathione really great for Immunity Building

Despite its importance in strengthening the immune system, glutathione is a new topic for most people. Well, if you are hearing of it for the first time, this article is for you. It’s never too late for anyone to start reaping off the immune building benefits of this important antioxidant.

What is glutathione?

Glutathione is a very simple sulphur-based molecule produced by the human body. It is made up of three building blocks which are glycine, cysteine, and glutamine. The secret of its power in promoting a stronger immune system is the presence of sulphur.

As a metal, sulphur is a very sticky molecule and therefore all the bad things (free radicals, disease-causing microorganisms, harmful chemicals and toxins) are bound to stick to it.  

Glutathione and life expectancy

Research in medical health has confirmed beyond doubt of the role of glutathione in increasing life expectancy. The main reason behind this fact is that as a master antioxidant, glutathione is able to protect cells against free radical damage. Protecting cells from oxidative inflammation prolongs the life of every single cell. This, in turn, translates to a longer, healthier life of a person.    

Glutathione is also actively involved in the repair of already damaged cells. These damaged cells would cause potentially risky infections if they were otherwise not repaired. Besides free radicals, other factors that would damage the cell structure include stress, aging, infections, radiation, and pollution among others.

In as much as we are saying that our bodies are able to produce this cell protecting molecule, the functions of the immune system together with aging often reduces its levels to almost zero. We ,therefore, need to supplement our bodies with over-the-counter glutathione supplements and sulphur-based foods.

A closer look at the immune functions

Let us now have a closer look at the immune functions of glutathione.

  • Cell manufacture, growth, division, and repair

Cells usually go through a number of stages after they have been manufactured by the human body. After maturing up, some of them might be damaged by free radicals and other side factors such as the presence of metals like sulphur and mercury in the blood stream.

Glutathione is actively involved in the manufacture of cells, their development, and the repair of any damaged cell.

  • Metabolism functions

Toxic molecules present in the bloodstream attach themselves to the sulphur molecule found in glutathione. After the toxins have been attached to glutathione, it means that they are now more water soluble and therefore they can be easily transported out of the system through respiration and excretion.

Glutathione is also involved in the active metabolism of carcinogens, xenobiotics, and heavy metals. All these are harmful to the immune system.

  • The cloning of T-cells

T-cells carry the most important role of the immune system. Their role is to identify and label all disease-causing microorganism and toxic chemicals present in the human body. After these disease-causing microorganisms have been identified, they are then destroyed by white blood cells.

Cysteine is a critical molecule used in the manufacture of T-cells ad glutathione provides it in abundance.
