Handling Life the Healthy Way

Handling Life the Healthy Way

Our lives can be one of the most amazing and stressful things in existence. Even for people who think their lives are “boring”, there are moments that we question what we are doing and where we are going.

Some of us can roll with the punches with ease and the rest of us struggle to get out of bed when things are hard. Coping skills aren’t something we are born with, we have to learn them as we go along in life.

Today we look at ways to cope and get past the hurdles without causing ourselves unnecessary stress.

Take a Break from Drinking

When the car breaks down and you lose your job right after your dog dies, it is easy to reach for a bottle and drink until you don’t feel anymore. We get it, things get really hard and it’s a cheap way to take away the pain. Unfortunately for you, it can make your problems worse.

Alcohol is a depressant which means you may have a hard time walking (possibly causing a fall and you end up in the hospital), slur your speech until you can’t speak clearly at all, and can exacerbate your emotions.

You could literally end up feeling worse than when you first started. If you, or a loved one, have been drinking excessively through a rough patch, we recommend visiting an alcohol detox center as soon as possible. Not only can they help you get to a point of being clear-headed, they can assist you with coping with your issues.

Grab a Moment of Peace

Meditation is extremely helpful in getting a little peace in the dark hours you are suffering through. Some people think that it’s sitting cross-legged and chanting “OM” over and over. Meditation really is the act of slowing down, relaxing, and being in the moment.

When things are hard, we tend to spend a lot of our time rushing through our to-do list and how it all can go wrong and you will never get through this. Meditating allows us a few moments of quiet to feel our heartbeat and listen to the rhythm of our breathing.

You can do it sitting or laying down. You can use guided meditation cd’s, listen to meditations on YouTube, or attend a class that helps you learn the art. A dear friend has meditative cd’s in her car that she listens to while driving. She has reported less frustration when driving and feeling more relaxed.

Focus on Taking Care of Your Body

Self-care can come in a myriad of ways. It can be as simple as getting out of the bed to making a point to work that day. Taking the time to get out of bed, take a shower, and brush your teeth can feel like an act of Congress but you will feel much better physically for doing it.

The longer we lay in bed or go without a cleansing and it compacts how bad we already feel. Eating can also be a chore! One friend has a hard time eating whenever a loved one passes. He found that even if he just ate a mouthful of something, he felt better and it increased his desire to eat over time.

The longer he went without food, he began to feel physically ill to go with his mental stress. Eat! Doesn’t matter what it is or how often, just get something into your body.

Talk It Out

Talking about our emotions and struggles can be incredibly difficult for many of us. We face social stigmas, shame, and guilt when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable and expose our true selves. A trusted friend is always helpful in times of crisis! If opening up to your friend feels like too much, see a therapist.

Don’t worry about what they will think, they have heard it all. They are trained in helping us process our worries, develop healthy coping skills, and can recommend medication should you need some assistance along the way.

Every one of us struggles at times! Many of us put a mask on and pretend like everything is okay. Now is the time to take care of you.
