4 Secrets to stay Happy and Healthy during the Holidays

4 Secrets to stay Happy and Healthy during the HolidaysDuring the holidays it’s easy to forget about the importance of health and fitness. With so much tempting food around the majority of us tend to dismiss our diet during the months of November and December. Remember that it’s much harder to get back on track once you have fallen of the ‘eat clean train.’ Fortunately, there are ways to enjoy the season without gaining weight and losing your motivation.

The following are ways to stay happy and healthy this year during the holiday season.

Drink More Water

One of the most effective ways to manage your weight is by drinking more water. Even if you splurge, water will help suppress your appetite so that you don’t overindulge. It also has the power to flush fat out of your system. When you are lacking in hydration, fat cells cling to the body. Water helps you use fat deposits for energy. Have you noticed that when you are fully hydrated you don’t experience fatigue? Water breaks down the glycerol and tissue then consumes the fatty acids. This chemical breakdown results in energy and fuel.

Participate in Physical Activity

It’s extremely difficult to hit the gym when you’re busy working day in and day out – Christmas shopping and attending holiday parties. If you can’t fit the gym in as often as you’d like try to participate in physical activity for at least 15-20 minutes per day. Although it may not be as rigorous of a workout it’s important that you keep your cardio up because it will help you manage your moods, weight and hormones which in turn promotes happiness and prevents weight gain.

Treat Yourself

If you tend to get depressed around the holidays because of a lack of family or friends it’s that much more important to take care of yourself. The holidays don’t have to be a time to spend with others – it can be a time for appreciation and giving. Consider how many people are in the same situation as you. It’s your duty to make the best of your circumstances and do something for yourself. On top of eating well and exercising don’t be afraid to spend money on what you want around the holidays. If you don’t have much financial leverage, consider doing something you enjoy or travel to relieve stress.

Give to Others

One of the best ways to feel good about yourself is by giving to others. Being that Christmas is a time for giving, take advantage of all of the people who are in need during the holiday season. Volunteer at your local shelter or donate money to a child’s program – such as ‘Toys for Tots.’ By giving to others who don’t have much around Christmas time it will help you appreciate what you do have instead of comparing your happiness to that of others.

To stay happy and healthy during the holidays you have to take the initiative to do so. Continue to work out when you can, eat clean and participate in activities that make you feel good and boost your self esteem.
