Here are 10 of the easiest tech tasks that everyone should learn how to do.

1. Back Up Your Computer

Too many people do not realize the importance of backing up the information stored on their computer. The worst way to discover this is to experience a cyber attack, have your hard drive wiped, and realize that you do not have any of your important information stored. Whether it is on an external hard drive, or an online storage service, find somewhere else to backup your data.

2. Create a PDF File

Now that most legal documents are digital—from job applications to housing contracts, to name a few—creating a PDF is an essential skill. A PDF is the only way to send a legal document, as it is secure and prevents others from editing it. You can do this by downloading a PDF creator. It is also worth looking into how you might do this on a tablet device.

One of the first things that you will want to do when you move is to make sure that you have an Internet connection. So the best skill that you can learn is how to do this yourself. More than this, making it secure is important in preventing others from slowing it down or even gaining access to important documents.

4. Clean a Dirty Keyboard

To keep your computer working at its best, proper cleaning is encouraged. Tools that can help you with this include a can of compressed air, cotton swabs, and even sticky notes, all of which can help you get in between the keys.

7. Use Keyboard Shortcuts

A basic knowledge of keyboard shortcuts can save you a lot of time and energy. Some essential shortcuts include ctrl + p (print), ctrl + s (save),ctrl + f (find a word), ctrl +t (open new tab in browser), ctrl + c and ctrl + v (copy and paste).

8. Protect Your Computer From Viruses

A basic foundation knowledge of cyber security will save you a lot of pain and money. Take a tutorial, either from a book or online, and educate yourself on the risks that you face.

9. Make Best Use of the Cloud

There are now plenty of online services that will allow you to not only back up important files online, but also share files with others immediately, access your computer remotely, and even find lost devices.

10. Maximize Battery Life

Learn what drains your battery, such as screen brightness and certain power settings, and adjust your habits accordingly. A ten-minute battery is no fun for anyone, so learn how to lengthen your device’s battery life before it comes to that.

Good tips! I like to use the keyboard cleaners from eklenz.com. Their pointy tip really gets in between the keys well.

Thanks for the comment! That’s a good observation about the pointy tip. I’m always eating in front of the computer and my keyboard always needs a good clean 😉
