3 Fun Projects to Make for Your Pets

3 Fun Projects to Make for Your PetsWho doesn’t like fleece? Along with being warm and cozy, fleece is fun and easy to work with, making it a favorite fabric for all kinds of crafting. But fleece isn’t just for us “humans.” Pets like being warm and comfortable too. So, if you’ve got a dog or cat and you enjoy crafting, here’s a look at some fun and easy fleece projects to make for your pets.

Doggy Tug and Chew Toy

Despite being lightweight, fleece is incredibly durable, making it an ideal fabric for dogs to chew and tug on. To make a fleece rope doggy toy, all you need are three long strips of fleece roughly 3 inches wide by 36 inches long. Tie the strips off at one end and then braid them into a tight rope. Then tie off the other end with a tight knot and trim off the ends. Kids will enjoy helping with this project. As the toys get slobbery and dirty with use, they can be easily cleaned in the washing machine. It’s a good idea to make several tug toys at a time as they will become frayed with use and should be replaced.

Fleece Cat / Kitten Blanket

If you have cats you know they like nothing better than curling up on a cozy blanket. Local animal shelters know this too and they are always looking for new blankets for homeless cats and kittens. Fleece is the ideal fabric for cat blankets, as it provides needed warmth, durability and wash- ability. It’s also inexpensive, and its non-fraying feature makes it easy to work with and even more suitable for donation purposes. Making cat blankets is also a great way for all family members to spend quality family time together. All that’s needed is some machine-washable fleece material and some sharp scissors. To make large fleece blankets cut two rectangles of fabric 18 inches wide and 28 inches long.

Now lay one rectangle atop the other and, cutting through both pieces at once, cut a 3-inch square out of each corner and discard the pieces. Now, keeping the rectangles together, fringe all sides by making ¾-inch by 3-inch cuts, making sure to make the cuts as even as possible. Now tie the top layer fringe to the bottom layer fringe using double knots and your blanket is complete. Smaller blankets for kittens can be made from two fabric rectangles cut 14 inches wide by 18 inches long. To donate blankets contact your local humane society.

Fleece Pom-Pom Ball

When it comes to making a fun toy for cats and dogs, few things beat the fleece pom-pom ball. And like most fleece crafts the fluffy balls are very easy to make. All you need to do is cut 3 to 6 pieces of fleece measuring roughly 1-inch wide by 60 inches long. Now cut out a 3-inch by 6-inch rectangle of cardboard and wrap each length of fleece loosely around the middle 4 inches of the cardboard, one piece at a time. When all the fleece pieces are wrapped, there should be about an inch of cardboard showing at each end of the cardboard rectangle.

Now gently slide the wrapped section of fleece free of the cardboard and tie a 1-inch by 6-inch length of fleece around the middle of the wrapped section as tight as you can. Trim the ends of the tied piece with scissors and then cut through all the loops of fleece on both sides of the tied off section and fluff up the resultant pom-pom ball. Finish by trimming the pom-pom ball down to the desired density. Try it, and you’ll be asking yourself who is having more fun with the pom-pom ball, you or your pet?
