Running a business today requires a survival guide. Blame it on the tough economic times and the competition that is only getting more intense, but the entrepreneur of today needs to be gutsier and more equipped. Much is expected from business owners, and business owners know this very well. They beat themselves up and end up stressed because of too much work.

But that shouldn’t be the case. You should be able to enjoy life not only outside of running your business, but also while you’re at it. Here are some things that you can do to be your most productive while remaining stress-free: 

Maximize your biological clock

Figure out what your best and worst times of the day are. There’s no sense in waking up early just to accomplish so little. If you’re an evening person, work in the evening, sleep late, and sleep long. When you wake up the next day, you will have enough time for other things, such as lunch and sunset. Kidding.

Don’t bring home work

Let’s contextualize this. Since a lot of business owners now work from home, this advice might not be applicable anymore. But what we’re saying is that you should only work during the schedule that you set for work. You shouldn’t think of it or even check your email during dinner, while you’re spending time with your family, and at any time that you’re not supposed to be working. This can slow you down instead of help you speed things up. If you get strict about finishing work on time, then you will be able to accomplish more within the time frame that you have allotted for work.

Stay connected during business hours

Take note of the phrase “during business hours”. Disconnect beyond official business hours to give room for other important things in your life (maybe catching up with your Facebook friends or catching up with your yoga poses). But while you’re at work, make sure that you are accessible to clients and staff. If you don’t have a smartphone yet, get one now and stay connected even when you are not in the office through technologies such as virtual PBX systems like RingCentral and free email like Gmail or YahooMail.

Learn how to focus on a task

Sometimes, because we think we have so much time on our hands, we procrastinate and delay finishing things. Of course, we end up accomplishing only half of the things that we’re supposed to. Learn the art of focus. For instance, if you need to create a plan for a new product launch, concentrate on it until you finish the draft, and never leave your desk until you do so. You won’t even feel the need for coffee when you do this. Instead, all your cravings (for coffee, for lunch, for playing Draw Something) will all kick in soon after you finish the task. Give yourself a short but indulgent break, and then get back to work.
